City Hunter

An assassination attempt on the South Korean president in Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon, Myanmar), results in heavy casualties and loss of life.  Following an investigation, it is revealed that the attempt was carried out by North Korea.  The South Koreans retaliate in a covert operation called “Operation Cleansweep”, with special forces entering North Korea to eliminate the North Korean high command responsible for the bombing.  Shortly after they arrive, the officials abort the plan under threat from it becoming an international incident and withdraw support for the mission.

As they try to leave North Korea, their own side turns on them, with a sniper opening fire on them from a submarine that is waiting to extract them.  The sniper eliminate all of the special forces, apart from one, Lee Jin-pyo (Kim Sang-joong) who swims to safety.

He names the child Lee Yoon-sung (Lee Min-ho) and over the years trains him in combat in preparation for him to exact his revenge.  He then sends Yoon-sung to America to study and on his return secures him a position at the Blue House, as an expert in IT in the National Communication Network Team.  His cover in place, he starts to systematically take down the five people responsible for his father’s death, becoming known as the City Hunter – the person responsible for exposing corruption and restoring justice.
